
Lead Engineer - Manufacturing
St Albans, Hertfordshire
Up to £55,000 per annum
Monday to Friday, 8am-4pm
The Opportunity
A hands-on and forward-thinking Lead Engineer is required to take responsibility for engineering operations across modern packaging and manufacturing lines within a growing, highly regulated business. This is an exciting opportunity for someone with a strong technical background who also thrives in leadership, planning, and continuous improvement.
The role involves leading and developing a small but growing engineering team, overseeing daily maintenance, troubleshooting, and long-term reliability of equipment and systems across both Manufacturing and Packaging departments.
Key Responsibilities for the lead engineer
- Provide hands-on engineering support across all machinery, equipment, and plant.
- Lead, supervise, and develop a team of Engineers and Technicians.
- Plan and coordinate daily tasks, shift schedules, and preventative maintenance
- Troubleshoot and perform reactive maintenance to reduce downtime.
- Deliver continuous improvement projects using lean and agile manufacturing methods.
- Liaise with external suppliers and manage service contracts and equipment upgrades.
- Maintain accurate equipment logs, maintenance records, and compliance documentation.
- Ensure all activities comply with GMP, Health & Safety, and regulatory standards.
- Represent the Engineering team in cross-functional meetings and planning.
- Support CAPA (Corrective and Preventive Actions) processes.
- Manage on-site inventory and sourcing of spare parts and materials.
What we are looking for in a lead engineer
- Experience in a hands-on engineering role within a regulated manufacturing environment (pharmaceuticals, FMCG, food, or similar).
- Strong leadership and team development capabilities.
- Good knowledge of GMP, Health & Safety, and quality compliance.
- Excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Experience with packaging and production equipment is desirable.
- Comfortable leading change and supporting business growth through engineering best practices.
